Literacy Narrative

As a child of a large family and being the baby of the family, I remember my mother reading to my siblings and I at an early age. When she did read to us it was bedtime stories it were our favorite time. I loved when my mother read to me, I always wanted her to read more as a working woman it was very hard to do. So when I became a mother, I read more to my children, but reading was not one of my favorite subjects in school. In some experiences at work and school, I always read selections word-for-word. I could understand the questions better by reading word-for-word. I never had a specific reading text or strategies to go by. My experience as a reader has been very rewarding, I learned by reading more helps me to become a better reader and writer. Several books I’ve read is The Hunger Games, Not Easily Broken, and I am reading The Bible daily.

I also read the Newspaper, I’m on the computer daily reading articles, responding to social media, and reading family and friend's statements on face- book. I sometimes listen to the bible on audiobook, when I just don’t feel like reading. I do feel that if I were a better reader in school my grades would have been a lot better. My expectations are to read & write more So, I can become a better writer, than my experience in college is a success. Since attending Thomas Nelson Community College my ENG 111/ ENF 2 & 3 class help me to become a better reader and writer. Reading more as an adult I’ve come to love it. I am not the first in my family to become a college student, most of my siblings also went to college. All three of my children have their degrees and that’s what encouraged me to come back to school.

Henry Ford Life

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t you’re right.”

Ford, born on July 30, 1863, near Dearborn, Michigan, born on his family’s farm. When Ford was 13 years old, his father gave him a pocket watch, which the young boy promptly took apart and reassembled it. He was not satisfied with farm work, therefore he left home at the age of 16, to take on an apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit. Ford would become an operator and steam engineer Also, study bookkeeping so he could have his own records. Ford would marry and have children. However, Ford would be known for establishing The Ford Motor Company, introducing The Model T in 1908, as well as introducing the $5-per-day wage I would argue to keep the good workers loyal to his company.

Ford died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 7 April, 1947 at the age of 83, in Dearborn Estate. Ford being inspired to do well he wrote several quotes to remind his-self “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t you’re right.” I think his quotes were inspiring and were a way to let readers know success is in their hands, and that whether you think you can’t, you probably can. The truth is reflected in his life becoming Ford was one of the America’s foremost industrialists. My concrete example of this truth from my own experience is not thinking I can do something in life whether it be personal or social.

BELIEVING, WE WE’RE BORN TO LEARN

Dr. Rita Smilkstein information on 10,000 people why? Learning is a Biological process. Also, why we we’re born to learn, and the 5-6 stages on how, and why the need to learn. Multitasking/ The Stages of Time Management

To become a successful writer, students should follow some important steps, in this article introducing the stages of not wasting time on doing too many things at once as well as managing time properly. Meanwhile putting time on the approached tasks could help you figure out what tasks are important and what are not.

According to Sarah D. Sparks a new generation of children research emerged that the temptation to multitask maybe unwelcome so, the ability to control it could be the real “bellwether” of academic success. However, 18 years and under multitask are more often and more extensively that previous generations. Understanding our obsession with technology and overcoming its Hold on Us. However, on average 13- to-18 years-olds use more than six types of media simultaneously during out-of-school time. The pervasiveness of technology and social media, coupled with fear of missing out on something importation has led students to pay “continuous partial attention” to everything but has resulted in their having difficulty concentrating deeply on anything.

According to researchers cited in the articles, can the brain “be in two places at once.? Simply, the brain can’t be in two places at once is my opinion, according to research results, for example: its fine to walk and chew at the same time, but when a person tries to do two things at the same time that each requires a choice Which, there brief “bottleneck” in the prefrontal-the decision-making part of the brain-that delays the second tasks. However, my question is; What does the cited tells us? The cited tells me that the brain can’t be in two places at one time and really we’re not actually multitasking we are putting our attention on two or three different things at once. My comments on the article are managing time and putting your goals in the right prospective on life. Also, its showing us different ways of using social media and the way it can affect your learning abilities to focus on the subject or not? for example, my personal experience is it an argument or an opinion? I think it’s a fact due to my personal experience.

My personal experience when I thought I was multitasking, but was switching my attention was. when I worked at the US Postal Service. Processing the mail to be distributed to mail carriers also, at the same time making sure the mail was in the code order, and taking out the damaged pieces of mail at the same. It took me longer to multitask than it would to just do individual tasks one after the other. The choice of multitasking affected my quality of work and had many mistakes. Sparks research shows that humans doesn’t multitask after-all the computers do all the work for us. We think we are multitasking in which we are “Attention Switching” between one task to another. The supporting details in this article is that multitasking in memory and attention tests compared to those who do one thing at a time? I found that the frequent multitaskers were more easily distracted and preformed worse on memory and attention tests that those who preferred to do one thing at a time. Also, the effect of the reader’s attention when reading is interrupted to take a phone call, email, or text message. However,

The Eisenhower’s Urgent, Important Principle of prioritizing for time management purpose by using the Steven Covey’s four Quadrants for time management is an effective method of organizing your priorities. It differentiates between activities that are important and those that are not. The moral of this is no matter how full your life is, there is always room for improvement. Also, making time for what’s important by using the Eisenhower’s Urgent, Important Principle, Priority managing time, which is the ability to use our time effectively. Being able to manage time that’s more achievable. Multitasking more than one thing at a time, valuing time that is how we find out which tasks are important focusing on high-value, and things that would keep us from setting their goals like distractions, procrastinate “free time,” also time wasted, like “TV”, Video games, and “FB” which are not urgent or not important. Simply saying No to the person and Yes to the task. Making sure my goals are in the Quadrant 2 to be successful in life.

I think by studying and learning the Quadrants 4 Matrix helps me to manage my time and to figure out what’s urgent /important in my life. Meanwhile, using the different stages to prioritize time management to the ability in having the best work overloads, being more effective in your work time and achieving more. Working smarter to enhance my productivity while valuing my time and finding out how much my time is worth. I found out in my experience that the quality of my work is worse when I multitask because it’s costing me time instead of creating it, by me doing one thing and focusing on that one the come was worth not jumping from one tasks to the other. During my research I’ve lower my stress levels and become more efficient, so I got out of the habit of multitasking all together. However, Quadrants Matrix 4 help me to manage my personal and social life keeping it in the right quadrants and what’s urgent/important. I think make sure to know what’s urgent/ important to achieve your goals as a college student.

My Conclusion is multitasking affect scores, and delays remembering what we were reading meanwhile, having to get back to what you were doing. However, people shouldn’t be taught this ability because, it takes the value and quality of the task away make it worthless. This leads us to the Original “Marshmallow Test” that shows one-third of the 4-year-olds tested had the self-control to wait, some kids gave in. Meanwhile few kids manage to wait the entire time. The interesting part came later, researchers follow up each child and the child who were willing to delay and wait became more successful in life. Similar results in the article on the ability of children to delay gratification in an exchange task. Texting seems to have become the new “Marshmallow Tests” The point is if you want to succeed at something, at some point you will need to find the ability to be disciplined and take action instead of becoming distracted and doing what’s easy. After all, The Eisenhower’s Urgent Important Principle, which shows us the Four Quadrants and managing our time have similar results showing us the urgent importance of prioritizing and the out -come of the experience of the “Marshmallow Test.’

American Red Cross

Annotated Bibliography of my Success

American Red Cross websites offers help and comfort to families in need. Also provide clothing and food for the family that lost everything in the disaster. Meanwhile giving the familiars a chance to start over again. I’m taking a humorous approach to this subject because of my major in nursing. Have to make sure that this website is reliable and current for the familiars that seek this form of help and not being miss-lead, which is the argument Red Cross staff have because of fraud in the past.

The American Red Cross is a nationwide network of more than 650 chapters and 36 blood services regions dedicated to saving lives. Giving blood is a simple thing to do, in my opinion, but, difficult because of the scheming of the people that’s donating the blood, Will can make a big difference in the lives of others. In my future as a college student and in the health field I want to make a difference in the people lives I come across volunteering to the blood banks in North America.

Red Cross blood donor puts the power to save lives in the palm of your hand. This isperfect for my career as a donor and my personal experience with The American Red Cross, which blessed my son as an infant having the blood needed to save his life. Researchers foundthat some people do not trust the organization due to past miss treatment of funds. My argument iswhether I would trust the organization that save my son’s life? yes I would have to do my job asa citizen of the United States. Saving life’s and bring families together.

The Red Cross continues to spread their needs of assistance around the world whether, it be fires, floods, or in any situation the Red Cross is part of the largest humanitarian network with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. That’s what they do? I didn’t really start using twitter until my brother was deployed by the Red Cross serving our county. Him being in harm's way help me to decide my career in healthcare to help people and making sure I’m successful in my life time.

The Midwest Region of the American Red Cross supplies blood and help victims of floods and treat patients in our community, such an accident, victims, transplant patients, premature babies, sickle cell anemia patients, and severe burn patients. There is no substitute for blood it can only come from healthy blood donors. However, being able to help in the Midwest is outstanding giving someone the gift of life in many ways. Some people may argue that we need help right here in the United States. Meanwhile, is everyone’s arguing or not? Are we going to help and support the American Red Cross no matter what?

Journal Entry # 2

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta Georgia. Growing up in Atlanta, he entered public school at age 5. Continuing to attend schools in the Atlanta area he became a popular student throughout his schooling. Although his family was deeply involved in the church and worship, young Martin questioned religion in the general and felt uncomfortable. His discomfort continued through much of his adolescence, initially led him to decide against entering the ministry, but in his junior year Martin took a Bible class and he became a Baptist Minister and noted for a Civil- Rights Activist and though his activism which played an important role in ending of segregation of African-American Citizens in the south and other areas of the nation.

King in his path as a writer wrote several quotes “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character --that is the goal of the true education.” This quote is very special to me because King’s need for everyone to be able to learn without fault, and with a purpose to be taught with the ability to become great. Martin puts his life on the line for everyone to have an education, know matter what color or background they may face. On the 4th of April 1948 King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. However, it changed my life as an African American because of my experience after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. After all, the world is a better place because of challenges Martin endure for everyone to be treated equal which caused him his death.

Paulo Coelho has written, “The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.”

Writer Paul Coelho was born on August 23, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Coelho attended Jesuit schools and was raised by devout Catholic parents. He was determined early on that he wanted to be a writer, but was discouraged by his parents, who didn’t think this was a good ideal for their son's future in Brazil. Coelho was a rebellious adolescence and encourage his parents to commit him to a mental asylum three times, starting when he was 17. Coelho eventually got out of the institutional care and enrolled in law school, but dropped out to enjoy in the “sex, drugs and rock’ n’ roll” of hippie life in the 1970’s. After changing his direction in life which my opinion was a great choice, which inspired him to quote “The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.”

After changing his direction in life, Coelho walked more than 500 miles along the Road to Santiago de Compostela, a site of Catholic pilgrimage. The walked and the spiritual awakening, he experienced inspired him to write The Pilgrimage. Paulo was noted for the best-selling novel, Alchemist, which sold 35 million copies and is the most translated book in the world by a living author. At the age of 38, he had a spiritual awakening in Spain and wrote about it in his first book, The Pilgrimage. It was his second book, The Alchemist, which made him famous. The concrete example is in the quotes that he wrote which reflected the truth. Also having the experience by taking that long walk that inspired him to write The Pilgrimage.

Kyle Wiens “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.”

&

Susan Adams/Why Grammar Counts At Work

According to Harvard Business Review, Kyle Wines' is CEO of iFixit, the largest online repair community, a software company dedicated to helping manufacturers publish amazing documentation.  Therefore, Kyle says he will not hire if you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, or grammar mistakes that make people look stupid. He figures if applicants can’t distinguish between ‘to’ and ‘too,’ their applications put into the trash. Wiens says its two reasons he cares about grammar. One, when communicating in written texts and posts, “your words are all you have,” Another reason is poor grammar shows sloppiness. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of her (important) things also aren’t important. futhermore, That’s why I test people who walk in the door looking for a job. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet. In the blogs, on Facebook statuses, in e-mails, and on company websites, your word is all you have. Good grammar makes good business sense-and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Wiens stated companies pay attention to sloppy mistakes Good grammar is needed in the work place.

Adams, Susan a staff writer at Forbes, also wrote about entrepreneurs, small business owners. Adams indicated that grammar had been getting attention in the media lately, for a good reason. However, some parents are cringing about the way usage of improper words like “lay” and “lie.” Being fed up with younger employees who bring the vernacular of emails, twitter messages, and casual conversations in the workplace, including the improper use of the word “like”” Good grammar, it’s best if you don’t use awkward pauses, “ums” and “uhs” Grammar is important, in spoken English as well as in the written word. Futhermore, when you speak, you project your level of intelligence and thoughtfulness. It also demonstrates how organized you are, in your thoughts and in your sentences straight before say them, you’re promising that you’re likely to master tasks at work.

Paraphrasing Without Plagiarizing

After reading the article by Susan Adams, close that source and, from memory, list the most important reasons that she states for knowing and using good grammar in the professional workplace:

Adams had several reason that grammar is important, spoken English as well as in the written word. When you speak, you project your level of intelligence and thoughtfulness. You also demonstrate how organized you are, in your thoughts and in your intentions. If you can get your sentences straight before you say them, you’re promising that you’re more likely to master tasks at work. The other thing suggests is that you are listening closely to the other person, and you’re serious about what you want to convey to that person. Good Grammar and clear sentences suggest respect.

After reading the article by Kyle Wieins, close that source and, from memory, list the most important reasons that he states for knowing and using good grammar in the professional workplace:

Kyle Wiens states, Good Grammar makes good business sense -and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Wiens hiring people with who pay attention to details. People sure speak grammar as well as writing it. It is relevant for all companies also, Good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet, also in blogs posts, on Facebook statues, in e-mails, and on company websites, your words are all you have. It’s important to know the difference between “to” and “too.” I agree with Wiens approach in his company’s writing skills however they write for a living, so it makes sense that we’ve made a preemptive strike against groan-wroth grammar errors in the workplace.

Use your lists above to compose a paragraph in the space below, giving the six best arguments from the two articles about why good grammar counts at work.

After reading both articles, they are similar in every way: Both articles think good grammar is needed in the work place. Language is changing but, don’t make grammar unimportant. Both articles argue the writing is just as important as reading because your words are all you have. Meanwhile, it’s a growing number of grammar gaffes in the office, especially among younger employees. Including, the ubiquitous

use of the word “like” and those who say, “I could care less,” when they mean “I couldn’t care less.” Both articles agree that more training is needed in grammar, as well as in the work place skills.

Why is Grammar Important in the workplace?

Grammar in the workplace is very important because, being in the healthcare fields and discussing patient personal information with other professionals, such as physicians and finance personnel. Communication is the main source for having good grammar in the workplace. Technicians assemble patient’s health information, including medical history, symptoms, examination results, tests, and treatments. Therefore, that’s why It is very important to be able to record the health data by ensuring that it maintains its quality, accuracy, accessibility and security in both paper files and electronic systems. The articles Kyle Wiens wrote why he Won’t hire people who use poor grammar and Susan Adams articles Why grammar counts at work are great example to have good grammar qualified skills for any positions.

Great grammar is attributed to a person’s ability to both speak and write it well, such as in high school or in your college level years. In every homework assignment, we had in our ENG 111/03 were to improve our skills, speaking and writing great grammar. Through all the hard work in our writing projects it is very rewarding to have great communication skills. My goals are to continue in Nursing, Administration Support Technology, and Medical Office Assistant. Having good grammar in the workplace is a most. My next classes are HLT-143 Medical Term I, AST- 107 Editing/Proofreading skills. I’m finishing up my HLT 106 First Aid/ CPR-AED which, I received a B grade. I conclusion is that by taking ENG 111/03 helped improve my grammar whether it be in the workplace or social life, its very important to have.

Heraclitus of Ephesus wrote, “Opposition bring concord: Out of discord comes the fairest harmony.”

Heraclitus of Ephesus was an early Greek philosopher who lived around the end of The Six Century BCE. (c.535-475 BC), which he lived around 60. He was a native of Ephesus, which is an important Ionian City just north of Miletus on the Western Coast of Asia Minor. Heraclitus was the oldest son of noble family. Little is known about his early life and education, but he regarded himself as self-taught and a pioneer of wisdom. He was known for as having written a single book, “On Native” divided into three discourses, one in the universe, another on politics and third on theology.

Heraclitus noted for his best known doctrines that things are constantly changing (Universal Flux), that opposites coincide (unity of opposites) and that fire is the basic material of the world. In this quote “Opposites bring concord: Out of discord comes the fairest harmony” I think referring to that criticism can change when people come together among themselves and agree to fairness in the world. This truth is reflected in the life of the writer as well as the world who read his books and was inspired by his quotes. However, my concrete own observation and opinion by reading about him, is Heraclitus saw divinity as present in the world, but not as a conventional anthropomorphic being such as the Greeks worshipped. William Penn said, “Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it.”

Penn, William was born in London, England, on October 14, 1644. His father, Sir William Penn, was an admiral and landowner, also he was educated in theology and law. Penn was educated at Chigwell School in Essex, he entered Christ Church College (University of Oxford) in 1660, but was expelled for criticizing the church of England. By 1670, Penn had become a figure of importance in the Quaker community.

William traveled to Ireland to manage some of his father property, and it was there that he came into contact with Quaker Preachers who inspired him to join their faith. Penn began the fight for greater freedom for this marginalized and frequently persecuted religious groups. Dealing with property and law that’s what inspired him to quote: “Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it.” We all have the rights to fairness, whether it be our lives or our property, being insured and honest within the law will pay off for the righteous.

His truth is reflected in his life by becoming advocated of democracy and religious freedom notable for his good relations and successful treaties with Lenape Natives American. Also settling the dispute using his legal knowledge and leadership skills for the property of others. Though the years Penn returned to England, which he suffered a stroke in 1712, and died in Ruscombe, in the county of Berkshire, England on 30 July, 1718. American Philosopher Richard Taylor wrote, “All men are fatalists as they look back on things.”

Taylor, Richard is a retired Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester and an internationally Ethicist. Taylor had a lifelong obsession with honey bees. Taylor attended the University of Chicago to study religion. His mother was a pastor imagined that he would make a fine preacher. Richard convinced of the absurdity of the Christian religion, were he encounters philosopher there, and discovered Plato. Which was a philosopher in classical Greece.

Tim Madigan is an Editorial Director of the University of Rochester Press, and a US Editor of Philosophy now, tracked him down to discuss Schopenhauer, metaphysics which, Richard is noted for arousing art of beekeeping and best-known work is Metaphysics, published in the early 1960’s which is still printed. Taylor’s wrote, “All men are fatalists as they look back on things.” Having to do with metaphysics traditional concern with explaining the fundamental nature of being, this is reflected in his life as a writer and how the truth is concrete. While we look back, we can’t change the way events will happen and that event, especially bad ones, can’t be avoided.

My own observation of the truth is example is the philosophy of President Obama follow the Obamacare act, Therefore, I believe that no two people will have seen life in the same way. Also the gadfly approaches the argument of changing peoples' minds like the clearest proof you could have that there is no God is the 9/11 terrorist attack. If God is watching over us, how could He allow such a horror to occur? Yet it seemed to confirm people’s faith in some strange way. My experience I give a great argument for God’s existence in my life every day, God’s wake’s me up every morning, that’s how I know God is alive, meaning no one can change my mine. My conclusion is that Richard ethics people have not changed significantly in the many years, however, politically incorrect to suggest that some people are superior to others. No one has answered these questions better than Aristotle.
